welcome to linux. your screensaver is set to ‘none’. the display power management settings UI is set to never switch off the screen. and the screen switches off every half an hour. this is because the “real” settings are in 19 bullshit files somewhere, and they all override each other. because it’s linux you can edit all 19 files yourself, it only takes a couple of hours! but by the time you’re done there’s been a package update that resets your changes. it also changed the config file format

i’m still constantly surprised that one of the biggest hurdles when learning anything gamedev related is not necessarily your technical know how, or even skill, it’s knowing the right specific terminology so that you know what questions to ask to find the right answers.
there’s about a dozen different ways of doing the same thing but only one is right for you…

learning something new i’m always struggling with what a specific thing is called so i can find the right rabbit hole to fall down.

@wbpeckham this is what i've preached for long. i've used linux on and off for different tasks since knoppix nearly two decades ago but the moment i criticize something on it people think i'm exclusively a windows shill. well i'd love to call them to explain better but they don't have working sound yet !!!! :V

linux is Fine. it's All Right. if you need something to run on a 10 year old laptop or know how to execute the ancient sacred runes. it's the proselytizing against windows that i tire of. your breaking updates are no better, bucko!!

windows is such a horrible operating system, it's completely unusable! you cannot do a single thing on it! now where was i resolving package dependency conflicts through ssh on a whole second computer to re-enable any use of my graphical interface

re: computer/controller gripes

@TonicBH you can just remap guide from open big picture to take screenshot within steam input itself

Tell your friends you care about them. You don’t know when you won’t be able to any more 😢

Extra remembering the times I’ve nearly joined them today. It’s hard. 😭.

New: Firefox users have reported an "artificial" 5-second delay when they try to load YouTube videos that is magically fixed if they use Chrome, which has been going viral in a few different places. I asked Google what is going on. They

1) Didn't deny the artificial wait time is happening
2) Said it's part of its war on ad blockers, not targeted at Firefox

Mozilla also told me no indication this is targeted at Firefox

Today is :flag_transgender: 🕯️.

If it's new to you, please research it and the issues, challenges, and threats we face that make today necessary. Remember the dead, and fight like hell for the living.

you know that quote that's often (erroneously) attributed to Shigeru Miyamoto -- "a late game is late until it releases, a rushed game is bad forever"?

well. turns out a trans woman game dev was the one who said it. huh.

I can't help but notice the new Apple laptops rate "Video Playback 22 hours, Web Browsing 15 hours" under battery life.

Congratulations web developers everywhere, it's now more computationally intense to render a webpage than video playback!

@kkarhan @fuchsiii i have a green one "donated" by a friend. it looks great, but

  1. the keys are very easy to miss. the space in between each circle keycap is enough for your entire finger to fall into
  2. you need a screwdriver if you ever want to take the batteries out. it has a very quick standby mode (giving you random dropouts) but no way to actually power off
  3. there's nowhere to keep the USB receiver in the keyboard so you will lose it unless you like, tape it to the back or something
